Yin and Yang

19 abril, 2020

The two forces that create and drive the Universe and all of life. They exist in nature and all around us, in each and every person, thing and phenomena.

Yin is represented by the black in the taijitu symbol. Yin is the night. It is anabolic, it accumulate. It is wet, cooling, slowing down, nurturing and creative.

Yang is represented by the white in the taijitu symbol. Yang is the day. It is catabolic, it breaks things down. It is dry, warming, speeding up, provoking and transformative.

The two are opposites, yet they compliment and complete each other and cannot exist solely by themselves. You cannot know day without night, nor can you experience pleasure without pain, love without fear, brith without death. Together they create a whole.

These two forces are in constant flow, the one giving birth to the other and vise versa. The white circle within the black carries and represents the potential of yang within yin, and the black circle within the white carries and represents the potential of yin within yang.

In these times of high uncertainty we might look around and only see destruction and fear. But we must try to remember that this is only a temporary expression of yang. When the time is right, when we are able to see things from a different perspective, we realize that yin is also there, within the tumult of yang. People might be scared, get sick, suffer and even die. But we are also slowing down, we are resting and giving birth for new things to come, new ways of sharing, living and hopefully, eventually also new ways of being.

Yin which is connected to the parasympathetic nervous system, rest and digest, governs digestion, elimination, growth and repair and makes us feel calm and connected.

Yang is connected to the sympathetic nervous system, fight or flight, increases the heart rate and blood pressure, makes us feel stressed but also helps us to stay alive in dangerous situations.

Which energy is more pronounced within yourself?

Good levels of stress keep the body healthy, but now a days many we are in a constant fight or flight response, because of the high levels of stress we experience or create for ourselves, that our body is not able to regenerate. Slowly day by day, week by week the body spends more energy than it is able to build up and this leads to overload on the adrenals, chronic fatigue, disrupt sleep, hormonal imbalances, illness and eventually premature death. Stress is the dis-ease of the modern world and is the root so many of problems and illnesses we are battling with. Slowing down, becoming more yin, taking time to reflect over the decisions we are making and the actions we are taking, is the only way to learn how to become more balanced. Balancing yin and yang is essential for health and wellbeing and moments like this invites us to revaluate how we are doing.

Like my teacher says, if you want to play hard, you also need to rest hard.

And the opposite goes as well! I for example have always been very yin, I am not an explosive person, I like to sit in front of the computer, to be calm and I get easily stressed. But I also know that my body loves the action, movement and thrill. I make myself get out there and move, I lift heavy things, exercise and take cold shower. Everything to stimulate and to balance the energies, myself and my nervous system.

The point is not to keep the two forces in a steady equilibrium, but to learn how to balance them in order for them to serve our dreams and goals. Sometimes we might need to be more yang to accomplish something and sometimes we might need a more yin to accomplish the exact same thing.

I hope you take the time to check in with yourself and your energies during the lockdown!

Stay hole and healthy!

Much love,

In these times the focus on the external is bigger than ever. How many have died? What is this virus? How does it infect us? What can we do to protect ourselves?
People are wearing masks, washing their hands with (toxic) hand sanitizers and isolate themselves in order to protect the fragile. I suppose every one is doing what they think is best, but I can’t help to wonder, how many people are actually thinking for themselves and making sure that they protect themselves and the weak in the long run? I start hearing about vaccines and I  felt like I needed to let out some steam…

“Good or bad, time will tell”, is a saying that comes out of a story Raquel tells her yoga students now and then. It is a beautiful message concluding in that we never know if an outcome will be good or bad. We can only try to make the most out of the situation and that’s the best we can do.
I very much agree about that, but during a recent discussion I realize that there is another level to it: Responsibility. Sure, we should always do the best we can. I think we always strive for that. But if what we are doing isn’t making us take more responsibility, I’d say we haven’t learned much from the action we have decided to take.
To put it in context: We all know that there is something out there making some of us very sick. So sick that people are dying. Which is very sad (not that people aren’t dying every day, but that’s another story). But what I feel is happening is that instead of looking inward to our own health and taking responsibility for it, realizing that if we keep ourselves healthier we can protect ourselves (and others indirectly) from a lot of problems, people still seem to want to find an easy way to out (mask, hand sanitizers and vaccines).
Covid-19 is supposedly a virus that creates a respiratory problems. More so in people with an already low immune system, people who are overweight, have heart disease and other lifestyle related issues. It is a virus that attacks the ones with weak bodies due to mostly easily preventable diseases. So if we now are so concerned about this virus and the ones in the risk zone, why don’t we take this opportunity to look inside, at our own situation and make sure we don’t end up in the risk zone ourselves one day?
I would hope to see less focus on the external circumstances and more focus on ourselves. I want to invite us to take responsibly for what we, ourselves, are creating right now and for the future.

I hope we take this opportunity to quit smoking, clean up our diets, realize how little stuff we need to stay happy, how important nature and our health is. I hope we wake up and realize that we should switch to organic food, stop consuming sugar and stimulants, reduce the alcohol, call our parents to tell them we love them (and make sure they eat real food), go to bed in time, rise with the sun, detox, drink real water, move, do exercise and all the other things that we know we should do…

I am curious, will this situation make us take more responsibility for ourselves and our surrounding or will we when we get out, just get back to business as usual, hide behind old habits, external recommendations and toxic salvations.

One Love!

Do you know what makes you happy? Do you have an overarching dream in your life? And are you living in line with that dream?
One Love is the foundation of my coaching practice. Your One Love is your Dream or Goal; it gives you the drive to live and change. If we do not have a dream, finding the motivation to make positive changes in our lives can be difficult and we can easily become lost.

The dream keeps us motivated to stay on our path to wellness. It helps us to say “No” to what doesn’t serve us and “Yes” to what brings a sense of harmony to our lives. The dream will look different to everyone and might change with time. It may be financial freedom, raising a close family or having a healthy body. Everyone is different and everyone’s dream is personal.

Your One Love should give you a joyful ride and I will help you in keeping a healthy relationship to your goals and encourage your to enjoy the journey.  It is important to celebrate your milestones; commitment is more important than rigidity. I encourage you to always practice the 80/20 principle: following the rules 80% of the time and enjoying the freedom 20%.

You may ask yourself “If everyone wants to be happy, why is it so difficult to make the necessary changes in our lives to support our dreams?”. The law of facilitation tells us that “When an impulse has passed once through a certain set of neurons to the exclusion of others, it will tend to take the same course on a future occasion, and each time it traverses this path the resistance in the path will be smaller.”You could also say that energy and information will always take the path of least resistance; so, when a habit is ingrained in our system, it will take more effort to change the path than it will take to stay in an old pattern. This is where your dream can help you, giving you that extra energy needed to forge a new path.

Becoming specific with your dream is not always easy. “I just want to be happy” is a classic example. Happiness is a valid goal; however, naming what can facilitate this happiness can motivate you even more. “I want to be healthy and strong, so that I can play with my grandchildren, which makes me happy” gives us a bit more to work with. Playing with the grandchildren is the goal, and being healthy and strong are the necessary components to make the dream come true. Coaching will be designed to develop these components, and you will be supported by energy created by your goal.

If you can’t find your dream you can always look from the other perspective and ask yourself what your nightmare would be. What is it that you know you DON’T want it your life? And start with working away from that.

A first step: Make sure you are eating and drinking in line with your dream! Having a clean body and mind will give you more energy and clearer thoughts to move beyond the obstacles hindering you from reaching your dream.

Here are also 10 Questions you can work with to find your One Love:

  1. What do you dream about?
  2. What makes you feel good?
  3. What gives you a sense of purpose?
  4.
